Ramanathapuram: Five volunteers of Naam Tamilar Katchi created a flutter at Pandiyur near here on Thursday by climbing up a BSNL mobile tower and threatening to end their lives by jumping off in support of jallikattu.

As hundreds of students started assembling in front of the local body offices near the Collectorate, stepping up the protest in support of jallikattu for the second day, the volunteers climbed up the tower, creating a flutter and tension.

As they would not listen to police, Manivannan, a local party office-bearer, rushed to the spot and persuaded them to climb down. Then the party cadre – Niwaz, Rajendran, Kaleeswaran, Pugazhendi and Guatham – climbed down, and joined the students in the protest.

Jallikattu supporters had chosen peaceful and democratic means to secure the right for conducting the rural sport and the party volunteers should desist from taking such extreme steps, Mr. Manivanna said.
