More celebrities from Tamil Nadu continued to voice their support for the ongoing protests against the jalikattu ban on Thursday.
Music Composer A.R. Rahman on Thursday tweeted in support and said that he was fasting on Friday in support of the spirit of Tamil Nadu. Chess champion Viswanathan Anand too tweeted in support and said that he respects jalikattu as a cultural symbol.
“My State rises again. In unison. In peace. Proud to be #tamizhanda . Genext here are modern yet culturally rooted,” he said, on his twitter page.
While the Nadigar Sangam had announced a day-long fast at the Sangam grounds on Friday, many twitter users on Thursday began to tweet under the hashtag ‘#SayNoToJalikattu’ and said that they did not want the stars to have a separate protest as it would divert attention from the youngsters protesting at Marina as well as across the State.
“If actors want to protest, they should come down to Marina or join youngsters in other parts of the State,” a user said.
Members of the Tamil film fraternity including music composers G.V. Prakash Kumar and Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi, actor Aari and Raghava Lawrence have joined the protesting youngsters across the State. G.V. Prakash and Aadhi have been a part of protests in Madurai and Salem over the last few days.
Major multiplexes across Chennai city including Sathyam Cinemas, Escape Cinemas and AGS Cinemas cancelled noon and matinee shows on Friday owing to the ongoing protests.
