AIADMK Legislature Party leader A. Anbalagan has asked Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy to step down since he had failed to champion the cause of farmers and the Union Territory’s claim to its due share of Cauvery water.
He was addressing participants at a day-long fast organised by the AIADMK on Tuesday to condemn the Centre for failing to respect the Supreme Court verdict to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).
Mr. Anbalagan said the Tamil Nadu government was going ahead with firm steps to ensure that the Centre constituted the CMB. But in Puducherry, the Chief Minister was taking the people for a ride. A resolution was adopted by the House on March 26 asking the Centre to constitute a CMB. However, there has been no follow-up action by the Chief Minister.
Mr. Narayanasamy was only staging a drama by saying that the government would approach the Supreme Court with a contempt petition against the Centre. It is amusing that Lieutenant-Governor Kiran Bedi had not given the government the necessary approval to file a contempt petition.
Who is the Lt. Governor to stand in the way of the rights of the UT and the protection of farmers depending on the Cauvery, he asked. AIADMK State secretary P. Purushothaman, MLAs and party cadres participated in the fast.
