The Chennai Metro Rail is a rapid transit system in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It started its first service in 2015 connecting a small stretch — Koyambedu to Alandur. As part of its phase I project it covers 45 km of the city and connects all major transport hubs the city — Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, CMBT and Chennai airport. This system carries about 1.15 lakh passengers a day on an average (2020 data), with a train available every five minutes during peak hours. Chennai Metro has been planned to be extended to the northern parts of the city which is likely to improve mobility for commuters.
