Tech for elderly care

Asian countries with rapidly ageing populations such as Japan, South Korea, and Singapore are increasingly employing tech-based solutions for senior care. In order to protect elders with conditions such as dementia or monitor them in case of falls or their going missing, caretakers and younger family members are turning to CCTV cameras, GPS tags, motion sensors, AI-powered speakers, care robots, and more. While those in support of the devices say that it helps them watch over vulnerable members of the population, tech researchers have warned that elders are losing their privacy and could be at risk if their devices are ever hacked or exploited.

WhatsApp fined again

Ireland’s Data Privacy Commissioner (DPC) has fined Meta’s WhatsApp messaging service a sum of 5.5 million euros, or $5.95 million, over breaching EU privacy laws yet again. The latest fine comes soon after the regulator hit Meta’s Facebook and Instagram with an order saying that the platforms had to rethink how they used customers’ personal data for targeted advertising. The DPC has levied fines totalling up to 1.3 billion euros against Meta, and has multiple inquiries still pending into the social media giant and its operations.

Getty sues Stability AI

After three artists launched a class action lawsuit against Stability AI, the maker of the Stable Diffusion deep learning model that creates images from text prompts, media content provider Getty has also announced that it is suing the AI company. Getty claimed that Stability AI had copied and processed millions of images without seeking the appropriate permissions from creators or getting the necessary licenses to use the data. The legal proceedings were commenced in the High Court of Justice in London.
