The Congress on Friday questioned why agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have not involved themselves, if charges of plotting an assassination bid against the Prime Minister by the activists arrested in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon violence are “serious.”

After disclosing that he is defending some of the arrested activists in court, senior Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “Do you think it’s an illusion of grandeur that the Pune police is in-charge of investigation and the NIA and CBI are nowhere to be seen? The biggest investigating agencies of our country are not to be seen in a case of an assassination attempt against the PM. The Pune police is in-charge? I find it absurd. I am gravely concerned about the security of the Prime Minister if you are leaving a matter like this to the Pune police.”

The Congress spokesperson also asserted that the email/letter where some of the activists are alleged to have discussed an assassination plot was not a part of the police case.

“If the charge is based on a letter, and this we have said in the court, at the minimum that letter should be produced in some FIR, charge-sheet or paper diary filed in the court. It is admitted that this letter is not produced in this entire Bhima-Koregaon case. Very strange! The letter of which everybody is talking about is not part of Bhima-Koregaon case,” Mr. Singhvi said.
