DINDIGUL: The protest by a large number of college students demanding revival of jallikattu and a ban on People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) entered the third day on Thursday.
Support to the students was pouring in as Lorry Owners’ Association and traders’ associations extended their support to them. More than 5,000 students sat on Dindigul-Tiruchi Highway junction.
Arrival of the students was continuous and growing since morning. A section of people brought two bulls in a procession to the venue. Another section of villagers came in reklas to the spot.
Even girl schoolchildren came to the spot and extended their support to the protesters. Hundreds of girl students from various colleges sat on the road, shouting slogans against PETA. More than 500 students of St. Mary’s School thronged the venue in the evening and joined the stir.
Other sections of people and members of traders’ association reached Tiruchi Road junction and extended their support to the students.
While actor Vijay Sethupathi campaigned among the students at Gandhigarm Rural Institute at Gandhigram, actor Samudhrakani sat with the students and raised slogans at Natham.
More than 200 youths staged a demonstration at Sanarpatti. People of several villages in Vilpatti pancahayat hoisted black flags and assembled in a common place in support of jallikattu.
The students of MVM Arts College for Women staged a sit-in dharna on the college campus. Government employees too joined the stir by staging a demonstration at the Colletorate during lunch hour.
Bandh
Dindigul Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced that all shops in the city would remain closed on Friday in support of jallikattu. Mother Teresa University declared holiday till January 24.
Theni
Traders’ Association in Theni too supported the protesting students. More than 500 students of Government Engineering College staged a demonstration in Bodi.
