Even as India registered a highest single-day spike of 8,380 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the Centre has relaxed the lockdown rules to allow permission for malls, restaurants, and religious places to function in all areas except containment zones from June 8.

All kinds of social, political, sports, entertainment, academic, cultural and religious congregations would, however, remain suspended.

131 more COVID-19 positive cases were reported in Bihar taking the total number to 3807. All cases from Patna, Supaul, Jehanabad, Aurangabad and other districts. Total persons recovered so far are 1520.

Uttar Pradesh death toll reaches 217

Uttar Pradesh death toll reaches 217, total cases now 8075 while active cases are 3015, state health department said. Toll in Agra reaches 4. U.P. recorded 378 cases in the past 24 hours, including 49 in Noida, 33 in Ghaziabad, 20 in Deoria, 19 each in Ghazipur and Firozabad and 16 in Lucknow. With 171, Noida has highest active cases in UP followed by Basti (129) and Amethi (117).

9.40 pm | Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh reports 198 new cases

Madhya Pradesh on Sunday recorded 198 new COVID-19 cases, taking the count to 8,089. The number of active cases stands at 2,897. Seven patients died of the illness on the day. Three persons died in Indore,  while Bhopal, Ujjain, Sagar and Sheopur reported one death each. The State-wide death toll climbed to 350. As for recoveries, 398 patients were discharged from hospitals across the State. So far, 4,842 patients have been cured of the illness, says the State Directorate of Health Services.

Mizoram extends lockdown till June 30

The Mizoram government on Sunday extended the ongoing lockdown for another one month till June 30.

The state government also issued new guidelines for the fifth phase of the lockdown with special emphasis on social distancing and maintenance of strict vigilance along the international and inter-state borders, which will come into effect from Monday.

Tripura reports 34 new cases

With 34 new Covid-19 positive patients, tally in Tripura soared to 45 on Sunday to record highest number of  cases on a single day. Total infections in the state now stands at 316. All new cases today are of people returned from Chennai in special trains.

105 new COVID-19 cases in J&K

The novel coronavirus cases in Jammu and Kashmir rose to 2,446 on Sunday after 105 more people tested positive for the infection, officials said.

The new cases include 17 pregnant women -- 10 from Baramulla district -- and a nursing assistant from the Chest Diseases hospital in Srinagar, the officials said.

Maharashtra reports 2,487 new cases; State tally rises to 67,655

Maharashtra reported yet another massive spike of 2,487 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday to take  the State's cumulative case tally to 67,655, while 89 fatalities saw the total death toll rise to 2,286. As many as 1,248 patients were discharged today taking the total number of discharged till date to 29,329. Mumbai's total case tally inched towards the 40,000 mark, reaching 39,686 cases, while it's death toll stood at 1279. As many as 52 of the new deaths reported today were from Mumbai, nine each from Pune district and Navi Mumbai, and six from Malegaon city in Nashik among other parts of the state.

7.50 pm | Tamil Nadu

Highest single day spike of 1,149 new COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu witnessed the single day highest spike of 1,149 coronavirus cases on Sunday, crossing the 22,000 mark, while 13 deaths took the death toll to 173.

Of the new cases, 95 were passengers who arrived in the state through various modes of transport, a health department bulletin said.

The total number of cases now stood at 22,333, it said.

Biggest single-day spike of 371 COVID-19 cases in Bengal

West Bengal on Sunday registered the highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases, with 371 more testing positive for the disease, the health department said.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the state currently stood at 5,501 in the state, while active cases rose to 3,027, the department said.

Asian Games gold medal-winning former boxer Dingko Singh, who is already battling liver cancer, has tested positive for COVID-19, a source close to him told PTI on Sunday.

The 41-year-old was flown to the national capital earlier this month to undergo radiation therapy and had returned to his home state Manipur after being diagnosed with jaundice once again.

Senior Rail Bhavan official tests positive for COVID-19

A director-level officer of the Rail Ministry at Rail Bhavan here has tested positive for COVID-19, the sixth case detected in the building since May 13, prompting authorities to send 29 staffers to home quarantine, officials said Sunday.

The officer last came to work at the rail headquarters on May 22.

Meghalaya extends lockdown till June 6

The Meghalaya government has extended the ongoing lockdown till June 6 continuing with the existing curbs, but will allow more shops selling non-essential items to reopen, officials said on Sunday.

The fourth phase of the countrywide lockdown ends on Sunday midnight.

Telangana extends lockdown in containment zones till June 30

The Telangana government on Sunday extended the lockdown in containment zones till June 30 even as it lifted the restrictions on inter-state movement of people.

Certain restrictions currently in force in non- Containment Zones would however remain extended till June 7.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar announced the extension of lockdown after holding discussions with Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, DGP Mahender Reddy and other senior officials in the backdrop of the Centre issuing new guidelines on the COVID-19 lockdown

Highest spike of 1,295 new COVID-19 cases in Delhi takes total to over 19,000

As many as 1295 new positive Covid 19 cases were reported in the Capital taking the cumulative figure to 19844. About 13 new deaths were reported in the past 24 hours taking the revised cumulative figure to 473 deaths .

 There are 10893 active cases in the city as of now.

The previous single-ay highest spike of 1,163 fresh cases was recorded on May 30

6.10 pm | New Delhi

200 special trains start operations from June 1

The Railways on Sunday said it will begin operations of 200 special trains from June 1 and more than 1.45 lakh passengers will travel on the first day.

It also said around 26 lakh passengers have booked for Advance Reservation Period (ARP) from June 1 to June 30.

These services will be in addition to Shramik Special trains and 30 Special AC trains being run since May 12.

According to MHA guidelines, all travellers will be compulsorily screened and only asymptomatic passengers will be allowed to enter or board a train

5.45 pm | Assam

56 more test positive for COVID-19 in Assam; total count 1,272

Assam reported 56 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the total in the state to 1,272, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Of the 56 cases, 18 are from Lakhimpur, 12 from Barpeta, seven from Udalguri, five each from Baksa and Dhubri, three from Kamrup and two from Dhemaji.

Two people who recently returned to the state by air have also tested positive for the deadly virus. Of them, one is from Nalbari, and the details of the other person were yet to be determined.

At least 22 patients were discharged on Sunday - 16 from Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital, four from Silchar Medical College and Hospital and two from Jorhat Medical College and Hospital - after they tested negative twice for COVID-19, Mr. Sarma said.

Assam currently has 1,080 active patients. A total of 185 people have recovered, four succumbed to the disease, and three others have migrated.

5.30 pm | Karnataka

Karnataka govt. likely to decide on inter-state bus movement after consulting others

The Karnataka government was expected to take a call on resuming operation of inter-state buses after getting consent from other states.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has already started its intra-state services with several restrictions, but was yet to decide on resumption of bus operations outside Karnataka.

“We have not decided yet to operate buses. Other states have to agree for the inter-state movement of buses,” a KSRTC official said on Sunday.

The Centre had on Saturday announced the lockdown exit plan ‘Unlock 1’ that allowed among others reopening places of religious worship and restaurants.

Maharashtra begins phased emergence from lockdown

In what is being called Maharashtra's 'Mission Begin Again', the state will stagger opening of the lockdown in a phase-wise manner.

In phase I, which will come into effect from 3rd June 2020, outdoor physical activities like individual physical exercises like cycling, jogging, running and walking shall be permitted on public open spaces including beaches, public and private playgrounds, grounds belonging to societies or institutions, gardens and promenades with following conditions. No activities will be permitted in indoor portion or indoor stadium. This will be allowed between 5 am to 7 pm.

However, no group activity will be permitted and children would be accompanied by an adult.

Government offices (excluding Emergency, health & Medical, treasuries, disaster management, police, NIC, food & Civil Supply, FCI, N.Y.K., Municipal Services which can operate at the levels as per the need) will function at 15% strength or minimum 15 employees whichever is more.

In phase II which comes into effect from 5th June 2020, all markets, market areas & shops, except malls and market complexes, are allowed to function on PI-P2 basis (shops on one side of the road/lane/passage to be opened on odd dates while shops on the other side on even dates) from 9 am to 5 pm with some conditions.

In Municipal Corporations of MMR Region including MCGM, Municipal Corporations of Pune, Solapur, Aurangabad, Malegaon, Nashik, Dhule, Jalgaon, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur following activities are additionally permitted with restrictions, in phases as described below except containment zones.

In phase III (in effect from 8th June 2020), private offices can operate with up to 10% strength as per requirement, with remaining persons working from home. However all the employers will take sensitisation programs to educate the employees to take adequate precautions on returning home so that vulnerable group especially the elderly is not infected.

In the rest of State, No permission is needed from any govt. authorities for permitted activities.

All public and private transport will follow passenger management:

Two Wheeler: 1 rider

Three Wheeler: 1 + 2

Four Wheeler: 1 + 2

Intra district bus service will be allowed with maximum 50% capacity per bus with physical distancing and sanitation measures.

The following activities will remain prohibited across the state:

i. Schools, colleges, educational, training, coaching institutions etc.

ii. International air travel of passengers, except as permitted by MHA.

iii. Metro Rail.

iv. Passenger Movement by trains and domestic air travel unless specifically

allowed through separate orders and standard operating procedure (SOP)

v. Cinema halls, gymnasiums, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars

and auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places.

vi. Social! political! sports/ entertainment! academic/ cultural! religious functions

and large congregations.

vii. Religious places/ places of worship for public

viii. Barber Shops, Spas, Saloons, Beauty Parlours.

ix. Shopping Malls, Hotels, Restaurants and other Hospitality Services.

111 fresh cases in Bihar, total tally up to 3,676

111 more COVID-19 positive cases reported in Bihar taking the total number to 3,676 in the State. All cases from Bhagalpur, Purnia, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Gaya, Begusarai, Patna, Munger, Darbhanga and other districts.

4.15 pm | Kerala

TN with good health care system can implement Kerala model against COVID-19: Shailaja

The Kerala model in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic can be implemented in Tamil Nadu as it also has good public health care system, Health Minister K K Shailaja said on Sunday.

Participating in an online discussion with actor-turned- politician Kamal Haasan of Makkal Needhi Maiam, she highlighted various measures taken by Kerala, whose treatment and monitoring protocols have come in for praise from various quarters, to check the spread of the coronavirus.

“Despite the financial constraints, we are able to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic with the people-centred policies. We also have good public health centre and dedicated health workers,” the Minister said in the Facebook live discussion titled Maiam Talks.

Tamil Nadu, which is among the states witnessing high number of in COVID-19 cases, too has a good public healthcare system and can implement measures such as strict quarantine and treating symptomatic persons taken by Kerala, she said.

Seven returnees test COVID-19 positive in Nagaland

Seven returnees from Chennai tested positive for COVID-19 in Nagaland on Sunday, taking the total number of cases in the state to 43, Health and Family Welfare minister S Pangnyu Phom said.

Of the seven, four are from Kohima and three from Dimapur, he said.

“Samples of persons, all returnees from Chennai, have tested COVID-19 positive,” the minister said in a tweet.

All of them had returned to the Northeastern state on May 22 by a Shramik Special train.

The train brought back 1,328 residents of the state who were stranded in different parts of Tamil Nadu due to the nationwide lockdown.

Of the 43 patients undergoing treatment at various COVID-19-dedicated hospitals in the state, 25 are in Dimapur, 13 in Kohima and five in Tuensang.

So far no deaths due to the deadly virus have been reported in the state since the detection of the first COVID- 19 patient in Nagaland on May 25.

COVID-19 cases rise to 802 in Uttarakhand

The number of coronavirus cases in Uttarakhand rose to 802 on Sunday after 53 more people tested positive for the disease, officials said.

Dehradun district reported the maximum 25 cases followed by Haridwar (15), Pauri and Uttarkashi (6 each) and Rudraprayag (1), a state health department bulletin said.

Most of the new patients have a travel history to Mumbai and Delhi.

The bulletin said 102 patients have recovered, five are dead and three have migrated out of the state and there are 692 active cases.

Nepal extends lockdown until June 14

The Nepal government has extended the nationwide lockdown until June 14 amid a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases and decided to deploy the Army in the worst-hit areas.

The country on Saturday registered its highest single-day surge in coronavirus cases with 189 new infections, taking the COVID-19 tally in the country to over 1,400.

The Cabinet meeting held on Saturday decided to extend the lockdown.

Meanwhile, the government has also decided to suspend all domestic and international flights until June 30.

The prior-imposed nationwide lockdown, decreed to curtail the potential spread of COVID-19, was to end on June 2.

Singapore gears up to exit circuit breaker from Monday, reports 518 new coronavirus cases

Singapore is gearing up to lift its circuit breaker measures imposed to curb the coronavirus pandemic after two months, even as the city-state reported 518 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the total number of infections to 34,884.

Singapore’s circuit breaker period will end on Monday, with measures to be progressively lifted in three phase starting the next day.

110 fresh cases, 2 deaths in Andhra

The total coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh has increased to 3,571, while the death toll reached 62. Andhra’s active cases now stands at 1,177.

2 more fatalities and 110 new coronavirus cases were registered today.

With 51 new recoveries, as many as 2,332 patients have recovered so far.

2.18 pm | Rajasthan

76 more COVID-19 cases in Rajasthan, total now 8,693

The coronavirus death toll in Rajasthan rose to 194 after one more person succumbed to the disease on Sunday, officials said.

The state reported 76 fresh cases, taking the total number of cases to 8,693.

The maximum of 21 cases were detected in Jaipur followed by Jhalawar 14, Bharatpur 12, Jhunjhunu seven, Kota six, Dholpur and Rajsamand five each, Ajmer three, Udaipur two and Tonk one.

“’One death and 76 coronavirus positive cases were reported in Rajasthan on Sunday.

Officials said 5,772 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered and 5,099 of them have been discharged. There are 2,727 active cases in the state.

Fourth phase of lockdown accounts for nearly half of total COVID-19 cases in India

The fourth phase of the coronavirus-triggered lockdown, which began on May 18, saw 85,974 COVID-19 cases till 8 am on Sunday, which is nearly half of the total cases reported in the country so far.

Lockdown 4.0, which will end on May 31 midnight, has accounted for 47.20 per cent of the total coronavirus infection cases, number crunching from the Union Health Ministry data reveals.

The lockdown, which was first clamped on March 25 and spanned for 21 days, had registered 10,877 cases, while the second phase of the curbs that began on April 15 and stretched for 19 days till May 3, saw 31,094 cases.

The third phase of the lockdown that was in effect for 14 days ending on May 17, recorded 53,636 cases till 8 am of May 18.

The country had registered 512 coronavirus infection cases till March 24.

India is the ninth worst-hit nation by the COVID-19 pandemic as of now.

Pune reports more than 90 new cases in 12-hour span

Despite increasing number of recoveries, fresh COVID-19 cases continued to pile across Pune district with 92 new cases being reported over a 12-hour span on Sunday as the district’s cumulative case tally (including deaths and recoveries) rose to 7,557, said authorities.

The district’s total death toll till Saturday evening stood at 329.

Of the total cases, only 2,878 are active ones, while as many as 4,350 persons have been discharged thus far.

As per figures given by the Pune Zilla Parishad’s Health Department till Saturday evening, there were 2,786 (not counting the new cases) active positive cases in various hospitals across the district of whom 2,293 are undergoing treatment in hospitals in Pune city, 266 in Pimpri-Chinchwad, and as many as 227 in Pune rural areas.

As many as 207 among these were in a critical condition.

Coronavirus cases in Pakistan rise above 69,470; death toll nears 1,500-mark

The total coronavirus cases in Pakistan has increased to 69,474, while the death toll reached 1,483, according to figures released by the health ministry on Sunday.

In the past 24 hours, 88 more fatalities and 3,039 new coronavirus cases were registered.

Pakistan’s COVID-19 tally now stands at 69,474 cases and 1,483 deaths, the health ministry said.

As many as 25,271 patients have recovered so far, it added.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Sunday informed detection of 11 more COVID-19 cases in the state. This takes number of positive cases to 282. All 11 returned from Chennai in a special train.

4 more test positive for COVID-19 in Manipur, total count 66

Four more persons, including three women, tested positive for COVID-19 in Manipur, taking the total number of such cases in the state to 66, an official said on Sunday.

All the new patients - two from Kangpokpi and one each from Imphal East and West districts- had recently returned to the state by a Shramik Special train and were in quarantine centres, he said.

The two from Kangpokpi district had returned from Pune, while two others had come from Delhi, the official said.

Manipur currently has 59 active coronavirus cases, and seven patients have recovered from the disease.

Arunachal reports fourth COVID-19 case

Arunachal Pradesh reported its fourth COVID-19 case after a 12-year-old student, who recently returned to the state from Delhi in a bus, tested positive for the disease, a senior official said on Sunday.

The boy had returned to the state on May 25 along with a group of students and was placed under institutional quarantine, he said.

Controlling coronavirus pandemic despite huge population an achievement for India: PM Modi on Mann ki baat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on  Mann Ki Baat  today, said, with much of public transport, planes and trains beginning to operate, the country needs to be more careful in observing social distancing norms.

“The last time we spoke, public transport, planes, trains were not running, but now much of it has opened. In such a situation, we need to be more careful. Social distancing, wearing of masks, must be followed strictly,” he said.

The entire movement of controlling the pandemic was people driven, the Prime Minister said, adding that it was a big achievement for the country despite its challenges like a huge population.

Indore’s COVID-19 count up by 55 to 3,486; death toll 132

The tally of COVID-19 cases in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh mounted to 3,486 as 55 more people were found infected in the last 24 hours, a health department official said on Sunday.

The district’s death toll due to the virus also went up to 132 with three more persons, including a 65-year-old woman, succumbing to the infection in the last three days, he said.

According to the official, 1,951 people have been discharged from different hospitals in the district following recovery.

Indore is the worst-affected district in Madhya Pradesh due to the COVID-19 outbreak. - PTI

Nine persons, including a doctor at JIPMER, has tested positive for COVID-19 in Puducherry on Sunday.

With this, the total number of cases in the UT is 69, of which 46 are active, and 23 have been discharged.

Uttarakhand minister’s wife tests positive for coronavirus

Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj’s wife and former minister Amrita Rawat has tested positive for  COVID-19 .

Her swab sample report confirming that she has contracted the virus came on Saturday evening, the minister’s OSD Abhishek Sharma said.

She is being hospitalised, he said.

India records highest single-day spike of 8,380 cases; death toll climbs to 5,164

Continuing its upward sprial, India recorded a new high of 8,380 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. There were 193 deaths reported in the same period.

This brings India's total case load to 1,82,143 cases — close to Germany's case count. The count includes 89,995 active cases, 86,984 cured/discharged/migrated cases and 5,164 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

“Thus, around 47.75% patients have recovered so far,” a senior health ministry official told PTI.

129 new cases in Odisha

Odisha registered 129 new COVID-19 positive cases on Sunday, taking the State’s total to 1,948.

The number of active cases is 889. While 1,050 patients have recovered, nine died. Seven of the deceased died due to COVID-19 and two others due to other ailments, says Health Department officials.

Tamil Nadu extends coronavirus lockdown till June 30, allows partial resumption of public transport

The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday announced extension of the ongoing  coronavirus  lockdown till June 30, albeit with more relaxations that included partially opening up public transport and allowing more employees at the workplace.

Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said the curbs on religious places, inter-state bus transport, and Metro and suburban rails would continue.

No total lockdown on May 31 in Karnataka

The State government on Saturday announced that there will be no total lockdown on Sunday and all activities will be allowed between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

A communiqué from the Chief Minister’s office said that this decision was taken following “demand by the public.”

The government had imposed a complete lockdown last Sunday.

1,163 new cases, 18 deaths in Delhi

The Capital reported 1,163 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 18,549, according to a health bulletin released by the Delhi government on Saturday.

This is the biggest single-day jump in the number of cases in the city so far and the third consecutive day of over 1,000 cases. Also, 18 more deaths were reported taking the total to 416. But all the deaths did not happen in the past 24 hours.

Government eases a slew of restrictions; malls, religious places to open

As Lockdown 4.0 comes to an end, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued new guidelines called Unlock 1.0 allowing malls, restaurants, religious places to open in all areas except containment zones from June 8. It however prohibited opening of bars, gymnasiums, entertainment parks, cinema halls, metro rail and international air travel.

 

The permit system for inter-State movement of vehicles has been removed and there shall be no restriction on movement within and outside a State. If the local administration has to regulate movement in wake of a surge in number of COVID-19 cases, it will have to give wide publicity in advance regarding the procedure and restrictions to be followed.

Brazil has record new coronavirus cases, surpasses France in deaths

Brazil reported a record 33,274 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Saturday, its health ministry said, and the death toll surpassed that of France and now ranks only below the United States, Britain and Italy.

Global coronavirus cases surpass 6 million

Global coronavirus cases surpassed 6 million on Saturday, according to a  Reuters  tally, as Latin America reported a grim milestone of 50,000 deaths from the disease.

Countries such as Brazil, Chile and Mexico are struggling to stem the spread of the virus, which initially peaked in China in February before large-scale outbreaks followed in Europe and the United States.
