Rs 35,000 cr budgeted for COVID-19 vaccination expenditure in FY22

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday provided Rs 35,000 crore towards COVID-19 vaccination in 2021-22 fiscal.

"I have provided Rs 35,000 crore for COVID-19 vaccine in this year 2021-22. I'm committed to provide further funds if required. The Budget outlay for health and well being is Rs 2.23 lakh crore in 2021-22 as against BE of Rs 94,452 crore and marks an increase of 137 per cent," she said while presenting 2021-22 Budget in the Lok Sabha.

India had earlier in January approved two vaccines -- Oxford's Covishield manufactured by SII and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin -- for restricted emergency use. The country launched its COVID-19 vaccination drive from January 16 in what Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the world's largest inoculation programme with priority to be given to nearly three crore healthcare and frontline workers.

According to the COVID-19 Vaccine Operational Guidelines, the shots will be offered first to an estimated one crore healthcare workers, and around two crore frontline workers, and then to persons above 50 years of age, followed by persons younger than 50 years of age with associated comorbidities based on evolving pandemic situation.

 

JNU reopening: Entry to 4th semester M.Phil, M.Tech, final semester MBA students allowed

The Jawaharlal Nehru University on Monday allowed fourth semester MPhil and MTech students of its science school and special centre, as well as final semester MBA students, both day-scholars and hostel residents, to return to campus.

The B R Ambedkar Central Library of the university also announced partial resumption of service.

A notification by the university said those students who require access to the laboratory and have to submit their dissertation or thesis before June 30 are allowed to enter the campus in its seventh phase of reopening.

 

 

No new COVID-19 case in Andamans for six days

Despite a steady inflow of tourists into Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Union Territory has not recorded a single fresh COVID-19 case for six straight days, a health department official said on Monday.

The caseload in the archipelago remained at 4,994, he said.

The death toll was at 62 as no new fatality due to the infection was reported in the last 24 hours, the official said.

The Union Territory now has four active cases, and 4,928 people have recovered from the disease so far.

 

No fresh COVID-19 case in Arunachal

Arunachal Pradesh did not report any fresh COVID-19 case in the past 24 hours, a senior health department official said on Monday.

The total caseload in the northeastern state stood at 16,828, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Lobsang Jampa said.

A total number of 16,758 people have recovered from the disease so far, he said, adding, there are 13 active cases.

Fifty-six patients have succumbed to the virus in the state so far.

 

India reports 11,427 new cases

With 11,427 new coronavirus cases being reported in a day, India’s COVID-19 tally has increased to 1,07,57,610, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to 1,04,34,983, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on February 1.

The national recovery rate surged to 97%.

The death toll increased to 1,54,392 with 118 daily new fatalities. The COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.44%, the data updated at 8 am showed.

 

 

Maharashtra sees spike in cases; active cases cross 45,000 again

COVID-19 recoveries in Maharashtra continued to be offset by a surge in fresh cases, with the State reporting 2,585 new cases on Sunday as opposed to just 1,670 patients being discharged.

With this spike, the active case tally has again surged past the 45,000 mark to reach 45,071, while the total case tally has reached 20,26,399. Forty more fatalities saw the State’s total death toll climb to 51,082.

The cumulative recoveries stand at 19,29,005, while the State’s recovery rate has marginally dipped to 95.19%. The case fatality rate stands at 2.52%. “Of 1,46,17,168 laboratory samples tested thus far, 20,26,399 (with the case positivity rate down to 13.86%) have returned positive. Over 58,000 samples were tested in the State in the last 24 hours,” said State Surveillance Officer Dr. Pradeep Awate.

 

Gujarat launches second round of vaccination

Gujarat on Sunday launched second round of vaccination of frontline workers, including police, district and municipal officials. Among the top officials who were jabbed included police commissioners and superintendents of police at districts, Collectors and others.

As per the State government release, as many as 54,825 frontline workers/officials were inoculated at 722 vaccination centres across the State. So far, 3,00,755 people in the State have received the vaccine shots since the drive was launched in mid-January.

Talking to reporters after taking the vaccine shot, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Sanjay Srivastava said everyone needed to get inoculated to win the war against COVID-19 pandemic.
