A Standard I student from Udhagamandalam has contributed around ₹ 3,000 she had saved up in a piggy bank over a three-year-period to flood victims in Kerala.

The student, Fathima Firthose, a six-year-old studying in Kendriya Vidyalaya near the Hindustan Photo Films factory donated her savings to Nilgiris District Collector Innocent Divya on Monday.

Speaking to The Hindu , Fathima said that she had been saving up the money over the last three years to buy presents for herself and her family. “However, I witnessed pictures of the catastrophic flood which struck Kerala on television, and immediately wanted to do all I can to help the people affected,” she said.

“I spoke to my parents and told them that I wanted to give the money I had saved to help the people and they readily agreed,” said Ms. Fathima, stating that her father supported her decision.

Fathima said that though her father was surprised, he did not oppose her decision to contribute money to the relief effort. “My parents have always insisted that I do all I can to help other people in times of need,” she added.
