In a heart-warming gesture, J. Jayasurya, a 15-year-old hearing impaired student of a Government-aided school in the city, on Tuesday, donated ₹10,000 of his savings to the relief efforts in flood-stricken Kerala.

Jayasurya was born with hearing loss and speech disability.

Jayasurya has been receiving a monthly pension of ₹2,000 from the government and had been saving the amount to replace his old hearing aid.

The boy’s mother, Srivalli, an advocate, said that the boy was moved by the visuals of the grim floods in Kerala and had been insisting them to donate his savings . The couple agreed to their son’s decision and took a Demand Draft of ₹10,000. They handed over the DD to Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy in his chamber at the Legislative Assembly.

“We didn't realise that he was born with a hearing disability until he was 3-years-old. He didn't respond to sounds and we took him to a special school in Vengatta Nagar for speech therapy,” his mother said.

“Jayasurya studied in the school for seven years and learnt how to communicate through sign language and lip movements before he was shifted to a regular school,” Ms. Srivalli added.
