In this session, S. Somanath, a distinguished scientist and the Secretary of the Department of Space, shares experience working in the Indian space agency.
He has made significant contributions to space technology in India. He piloted the National Space Policy, facilitated IN-SPACe activation, and led successful missions like Chandrayaan-3. He has also headed several verticals inside ISRO. With expertise in system engineering of launch vehicles, he plays a crucial role in projects such as Gaganyaan, introducing new launch vehicles like SSLV and Test Vehicle, and achieving milestones in the development of critical space systems. His next milestone is the Gaganyaan mission, which is set to send Indians to space.
He is a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, India and a member of the International Academy of Astronautics. He has published several papers in journals and seminars in the area of structural dynamics and control, dynamic analysis of separation mechanisms, vibration & acoustic testing, launch vehicle design and launch services management.
