Rubbishing allegations of “dubious” funding, the Aam Aadmi Party demanded on Tuesday a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the source of funds of the BJP and the Congress, and dared the government to order an inquiry against it.
In a letter to the Chief Justice of India, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal urged him to set up a special investigation team (SIT) for probing the funding of all major political parties in the fray in Delhi. “Five days ahead of the Delhi elections, the BJP has charged that AAP’s funding is from dubious sources. Since this is a serious matter, we want to make it clear that all our transactions are transparent and digitised. Thus, we request you to constitute an SIT to probe the funding of all major parties in the Delhi fray including the BJP, the Congress and the AAP,” the letter said.
“Any political party found involved in irregularity in funding should be derecognised and appropriate action should be initiated against the party functionaries.” Mr. Kejriwal wrote to BJP chief Amit Shah and Congress president Sonia Gandhi with the hope of getting a positive response.
“We are writing in this regard to Congress and BJP chiefs and hope that both parties will send their consent [for SIT probe into their funding] to you,’’ the letter to the CJI said.
The party changed its earlier plan of its senior leaders going to the Supreme Court to hand over the letter to the CJI. “We hope the apex court will take cognisance of our letter. If not, we will file a petition,” a party leader said.
