AAP Volunteers’ Action Manch (AVAM), which claims to be a splinter group of the Aam Aadmi Party, plans to field candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
Although the volunteers of the forum, not recognised by AAP, are themselves not very optimistic about winning any of the seats, their said goal is to ruin the party for AAP.
“A swing of two to three percentage can be enough to have a bearing on the outcome and could easily double or halve the number of seats a party wins or loses,” said Amit from AVAM.
He added, “AAP has already announced 22 candidates for the upcoming assembly election without any due process but we won’t. The concept of Swaraj is very important for us and volunteers will have a say in our candidate selection.”
Asked if the dent would help the established parties, opposing whom was one of the factors that drew them towards AAP at a point of time, Amit said it was important for long term gain. According to him, a setback now could put the party back to its original agenda of Swaraj and campaign for rights to recall and reject.
He also said that AVAM volunteers have already started talking to volunteers in different areas and would collect applications from those interested in contesting under the AVAM banner.
So far Mehrauli and Janakpuri, the latter being one constituency featuring in AAP’s first list, are two constituencies where AVAM has finalised candidates.
“We are not fielding candidates in all seats but only in certain strategic ones where we have some support,” said Amit.
Lack of resources, he said, was one of the handicaps they were facing.
