The Islamic State, also known as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is an Islamic militant group that advocates a fundamentalist, Salafi jihadist doctrine of Sunni Islam. It has claimed responsibility for multiple terrorist acts, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The leader of the group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi killed himself in 2019 during a raid by U.S. special forces. The group aims to establish a Caliphate which is a territory governed according to Islamic law.
