Thomas Cook, the world's oldest travel firm, collapsed on Monday, stranding hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers around the globe and sparking the largest peacetime repatriation effort in British history.

Terrorist camp at Balakot ‘reactivated’; India’s response may be beyond surgical strike: Army Chief

The terrorist camp at Balakot across the border in Pakistan that was destroyed by Indian armed forces through a surgical strike earlier this year has been “reactivated” very recently, Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat said in Chennai on Monday. Though at least 500 persons were waiting to infiltrate into India, adequate measures have been taken to curb it, he said.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a general reprimand against “interference” in judicial appointments and transfers, saying such intrusions did not “augur well” for the institution. The admonishment from a Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi came in a petition filed by the Gujarat High Court Advocates Association regarding a proposed appointment of Justice A.A. Kureshi .

Amit Shah suggests one card for all utilities

Announcing that the 2021 census exercise will be carried out digitally, Home Minister Amit Shah suggested one card for all utilities in the future. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for construction of a new building of Registrar General of India (RGI) that conducts the census exercise, Mr. Shah said the digital census has the potential to bring all kinds of cards such as Aadhaar, passport, bank account, driving license under one platform. "Why is it so difficult to link and update birth and death registration with census data?" he wondered.

Man lynched, two others injured over cow slaughter suspicion in Jharkhand

A differently-abled man was killed and two others were seriously injured when a mob allegedly thrashed them on suspicion of slaughtering a cow, in Jharkhand’s Khunti district, police said on Monday. The incident happened after local residents allegedly saw Kalantus Barla, Fagu Kacchap and Phillip Horo with the carcass of a cow near a river at Jaltanga village on Sunday and beat them up, a police officer said.

IOA and CGF chiefs to meet in Delhi on November 14, discuss shooting at CWG

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra is set to meet Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chief Louise Martin here on November 14 to discuss the “concerns” raised by India on the axing of shooting from the 2022 Birmingham CWG. Ms. Martin had, in a letter written on September 16, suggested the meeting between the top brass of the IOA and CGF to which Batra replied that the most suitable time would be November 14.

INX Media case: Chidambaram denies CBI claim of using FM office for personal gain

Veteran Congress leader P. Chidambaram, arrested in the INX Media corruption case, denied in the Delhi High Court on Monday that he used the Office of the Finance Minister for personal gain. In a rejoinder to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI’s) reply on his bail plea, he said that a Look Out Circular (LOC) has already been issued against him and it is preposterous to allege that he is a flight risk and can evade the process of law.

SBI to adopt repo rate as external benchmark for all floating rate loans from October 1

State Bank of India on Monday said it will adopt repo rate as the external benchmark for all floating rate loans for MSME, home and retail loans, from October 1, 2019. On September 4, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had mandated all banks to link all new floating rate personal or retail loans and floating rate loans to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to an external benchmark from October 1 onwards.
