In the wake of recent power-cut incidents at the Eden Gardens during the India-Sri Lanka ODI, the IPL organisers have decided to install generator sets as the main source of power to the light-stands.
“Generators will be used for all the four light-towers at the Eden Gardens as main source of power. However, CESC supply will be there as back-up support,” West Bengal Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakraborty told reporters after a meeting with all agencies involved with organising the IPL matches here.
Five major agencies have already inspected the towers in Eden Gardens with one agency having been assigned the responsibility of looking after power supply in the tower, he said.
Besides Mr. Chakraborty, the meeting was attended by Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen, DGP Bhupinder Singh, city Police Commissioner Goutam Mohan Chakraborty, Cricket Association of Bengal President Jagmohan Dalmiya, Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Jay Mehta and senior officials of CESC and PWD.
Describing the meeting as “cordial”, the Chief Secretary said that the city police would take care of the law and order situation at the Eden Gardens and the adjacent areas.
The meeting discussed law and order, power supply, water supply, transport and construction works, Mr. Chakraborty said.
Referring to the inquiry into the last power black-out at the Eden Gardens, Mr. Chakraborty said that the state government was yet to receive final report from the panel appointed by it.
“However, we received some interim suggestions from the probe panel as well as from two other committees headed by a Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police and IIT professors,” he said.
“We are concerned about power supply in Kolkata during summer and thus all necessary steps are being taken to prevent any power problem during the IPL matches,” he said.
