The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Volkswagen to file an affidavit on the status of proceedings against the company in other countries pertaining to the usage of “cheat devices” in vehicles to manipulate emission levels.

A Bench, on Tuesday, directed the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises to file a response to the report submitted by the company on the recall of vehicles in the country. The company had in 2015 recalled over three lakh vehicles in India following tests conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) that found emission levels to be higher than permissible levels.

The panel was hearing a plea seeking ban on the sale of Volkswagen vehicles for violation of emission norms.
