Supporters protest as Assange misses court appearance
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange missed a court session on May 30, apparently due to health problems. He had been expected to appear from prison via video link at a brief extradition hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court.
Roughly two dozen supporters chanted “Free Assange” outside the courthouse. His case has attracted fresh support from free press advocates in the week since the U.S. filed serious espionage charges against him.
Syria hits last rebel stronghold
The latest strikes in an unprecedented wave of regime bombardment on a jihadist enclave in northwestern Syria has killed at least 13 civilians on May 29, a war monitor said. Air strikes, some using deadly barrel bombs, and shelling by both government and Russian warplanes have claimed a mounting civilian death toll over the past few weeks.
The violence, which has rattled a fragile truce deal brokered by Moscow and Ankara in September, is causing mass displacement and bringing Syria to the brink of the worst humanitarian catastrophe yet in its eight-year-old conflict.

Taiwan's military trains for a Chinese invasion
Taiwanese tanks and soldiers have fired at simulated Chinese forces in an anti-invasion drill on the island’s coast.
The live-fire drill on Thursday at a beach in southern Taiwan is part of an ongoing annual exercise designed to showcase the military’s capabilities and resolve to repel an attack from across the Taiwan Strait.
China claims the self-governing island as its territory. Taiwan split from China amid a civil war in 1949.
The simulated response to a Chinese landing included assault helicopters, fighter jets and missiles launched at targets in the sea.
The Defense Ministry said the joint army-navy-air force operation tested the island’s combat readiness in the face of the Chinese military threat.

Shanahan told reporters traveling with him Wednesday that his “top priority” is implementing a national defense strategy that focuses on China’s rising military capability.
Trump is expected to formally submit Shanahan’s nomination to Capitol Hill in the coming days

Hungary boat capsize
At least seven people were killed and nearly 20 were missing after a pleasure boat carrying South Korean tourists capsized on the flooding Danube in the Hungarian capital on Wednesday, police and ambulance officials said.
The boat reportedly collided with another tourist vessel near the Hungarian parliament building, before turning over on the river, which has been flooding, with very strong currents, while a rainstorm enveloped Budapest.
In Seoul, the foreign ministry said the vessel sank with 33 South Korean tourists and a crew of two Hungarians aboard, adding that seven of the tourists were rescued but seven died, and 19 were missing.
An emergency rescue team is among the 18 officials South Korea plans to send to Budapest, the ministry said in a statement, and it will offer counselling to victims' families.
