Labour Dept. to take action against agency

Deputy Labour Commissioner A. Gandhi has said that the Labour Department will initiate action against the contractor executing the tunnel work in Thippapur village of Illanthakunta mandal where seven labourers were killed when the roof caved in on Wednesday.

Mr. Gandhi, who visited the accident spot on Thursday, told The Hindu that they found certain violations under the labour laws by the contractor and poor safety measures.

He said that they were taking steps to ensure that the contractor paid proper compensation to the deceased family members.

The detailed inquiry report would be submitted to the Rajanna-Sircilla Collector and also State Labour Commissioner for taking necessary action against the contractor, the Deputy Labour Commissioner said.
