PMK founder S. Ramadoss has demanded the lifting of prohibitory orders in Thoothukudi immediately. The district administration on Thursday extended the order issued under Section 144 CrPC till May 27.
In a statement, Dr. Ramadoss said that the police action had created much hardship for the people and the situation would become disastrous if there was another clash between the protesters and the police.
“Peace can be brought back only by removing the restrictions in Thoothukudi and restoring communication facilities. The police deployment should be withdrawn and the people should be allowed to be free in the area,” said Dr. Ramadoss.
Meanwhile, PMK youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss announced protests across Tamil Nadu, demanding that the AIADMK-government resign immediately.
“The benami government which has killed 12 protesters who were peacefully protesting has not realised its mistake. The people who have been fighting for their rights are being portrayed as ‘violent’. This is condemnable,” said Dr. Anbumani.
Viuduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder Thol Thirumavalavan has also urged the people of Tamil Nadu to participate in the bandh that has been announced on May 25 against the killing of the protesters by the police.
In a statement, Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani asked whether the State government was trying to send a message to those who organise protest by using bullets.
“The Centre and the State government should permanently shut down the Sterlite plant. If there is any hesitation on this, the State government must realise that there is a danger that the riots will spread across Tamil Nadu,” said Mr. Veeramani.
