A Dalit youth was murdered by a few Vanniyars near Chinna Naagal village in K.V. Kuppam police station limit on Sunday night, police sources said. Police personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent violence.

According to police, Elavarasan, 25, a resident of M.M. Kuppam, owned a poultry farm near Thenkani Malai. About 10 days ago, his younger brother who was going to the farm was stopped by Natarajan, a Vanniyar and resident of Manganipatti near Chinna Naagal. Natarajan questioned the youth why he was passing by Chinna Naagal and reportedly threatened him at knife-point not to return by this route. However, Elavasaran, who was informed of the incident, did not make it into an issue, police said.

On Sunday evening, Elavarasan and his friend Rajini were going to the farm at about 6.30 p.m. when Natarajan along with two others, Punniyakotti and Mohan, were waiting near the village. The trio stopped Elavarasan and demanded why he was passing by the village. Natarajan took out a knife and stabbed Elavarasan and attacked Rajini. Elavarasan was declared brought dead by doctors at the Government Hospital, Gudiyatham. Rajini is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Police have registered a case against the trio and have invoked the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.
