Srirangam tense, shops down shutters in central districts

Updated - November 28, 2021 07:38 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Shops and commercial establishments have started closing down across central districts following the conviction of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case in Bangalore on Saturday afternoon.

A group of party cadre went around Srirangam, the Chief Minister's constituency, asking shops to close down. Many shopkeepers downed their shutters voluntarily.

The party men also blocked the Chennai Trunk Road at Thiruvanaikovil near Srirangam, disrupting traffic.

Traffic has thinned out in many parts of Tiruchi city.

An effigy, apparently of DMK president M.Karunanidhi, was burnt by AIADMK men in front of the Rajagopuram of the Srirangam Temple.

Police were watching the situation without initiating any action so far.

Shops have been closed in Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Karur, Pudukottai and Perambalur.

Kalaingar Arivalayam attacked

Tension prevailed on the Karur Bypass Road as AIADMK and DMK workers hurled stones at each other in front of the DMK district office, Kalaingar Arivalayam, in the city.

A group of slogan-shouting AIADMK workers, marched towards the office and pelted stones. Some DMK workers present inside the office retaliated with stones and bottles.

A police team led by Shailesh Kumar Yadav arrived at the spot and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the AIADMK men.

Shops in the area remained closed as in most parts of Tiruchi.

Vehicular traffic was also stopped in the area.
