Reports of AIADMK ties hypothetical, says Congress

The Congress on Wednesday dismissed as a mere “hypothetical proposition” the possibility of its joining hands with the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu after snapping ties with the DMK.

“There is nothing like that. Please don’t read too much,” said Janardhan Dwivedi, Congress media department chairman and general secretary.

Talking to The Hindu, he wondered whether mere exchange of pleasantries between Congress president Sonia Gandhi and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa during the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Election Commission in Delhi should be considered a possible “change of alliance.”

This statement is significant as Ms. Jayalalithaa, in an interview published on Wednesday, referred to the possibility of a Congress-AIADMK alliance.

Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said there were “no hiccups or misunderstanding in the Congress-DMK ties and the alliance was smooth at the Central and State level.” Both the UPA government at the Centre headed by the Congress and the DMK government in Tamil Nadu were performing well with each other’s support, and no importance need be attached to the “mere speculation” on the Congress-AIADMK alliance.

Another Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said the Congress-DMK alliance was a successful one and there was no question of any rethink on it.
