Yuvaraj, prime accused in the Dalit youth V. Gokuraj murder case, surrendered before the Crime Branch CID officials in the town here at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Yuvaraj, came riding pillion on a two-wheeler. Before entering the CB CID office, he showed a thumps-up to his supporters, who had gathered in front of the office in large numbers since morning and raised slogans in his support.

Later, he surrendered before the senior officials. Police had a tough time in controlling the crowd, who continued to raise slogans even after his surrender.

Yuvaraj’s lawyer Pala Anand submitted his surrender petition to the CB CID team.

Addressing presspersons, the lawyer said that Yuvaraj has surrendered peacefully as per his assurance. He said that Yuvaraj will fully cooperate with the investigation team.

Security beefed up

Over 800 police personnel drawn from nearby districts were posted for security across the district as barricades were erected at seven borders of the district and all vehicles were checked from early morning. Over 150 police personnel were posted outside the CB-CID office on Salem Main Road where he intends to surrender. Also, security has been tightened in Sankari in Salem District and at Tiruchengode in Namakkal district.

Senior police officials said that vehicle checks were also being carried out at many locations in the Western Districts as they leave no stone unturned. They added that security has been strengthened so as to prevent any law and order situation arising out of any outcome.

Meanwhile, 16 members of Dheeran Chinnamalai Gounder Peravai were arrested after they garlanded the statue of Dheeran Chinnamalai in Sankari in Salem District and attempted to take a march. The police said that they were arrested for unlawful assembly.

Since Gokulraj’s beheaded body was found on railway track near Pallipalayam on June 24, Yuvaraj was on the run. In his recently released audio clips, he claimed to surrender on October 11.
