The Pattali Makkal Katchi on Friday urged the Chief Election Commissioner to reschedule Assembly elections in the State to first week of May.
The party adopted the resolution at a special general body meeting at Thailapuram. It exhorted all office-bearers, frontline leaders and various wings to send telegrams to the Chief Election Commissioner.
The present schedule would disturb students who are appearing for public examinations. Schools would also be converted into polling stations.
However, the party made it clear that it was ready to face elections any time.
In another resolution, the party endorsed the stand of its founder S. Ramadoss that the PMK would continue its unconditional support to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to enable it to come back to power and for M. Karunanidhi to become Chief Minister for the sixth time.
In yet another resolution, it stated that it was for the first time the PMK had joined hands with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi to contest elections. It would bring about harmony between the most backward classes and the scheduled castes and facilitate victory in over 120 seats in northern districts. This would ensure a thumping win for the DMK-led combine.
The PMK would continue its efforts to make disadvantaged sections attain equitable rights and live with self-respect without expecting government help and concessions from other organisations.
The party would continue to support the government in implementing welfare schemes and important projects such as the Hogenakkal comprehensive water scheme.
It also decided to continue its efforts for getting equal rights and devolution of powers to Tamils in Sri Lanka. Dr. Ramadoss, party president G.K. Mani, youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss, former Union Ministers R. Velu and A.K. Murthi, Vanniyar Sangam president J. Guru participated.
Addressing the general body, Dr. Ramadoss said it must be the endeavour of the PMK cadre not only to work for the success of the party but also alliance candidates in all the 234 constituencies.
Mr. Anbumani Ramadoss said that the allotment of 31 seats was neither high nor low, though the party expected more. The elections would be crucial for the PMK as it would determine its future.
