The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) have sought postponement of the Assembly elections scheduled for April 13 saying the poll process will cause inconvenience to school students taking their public exams.

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa has sent a representation to the Election Commission requesting rescheduling of the elections to either April-end or early May, a party press release stated on Thursday.

M. Thambidurai and V. Maitreyan, leader and deputy leader of the AIADMK Parliamentary Party, handed over the representation to the EC. The party pointed out that Higher Secondary exams, which began on Wednesday, would go on until March 25. Thereafter, SSLC exams would begin and go on until April 11. The examinations would coincide with the peak of electioneering. Moreover, teachers likely to be deployed for election duty would not be in a position to fully involve themselves in the pre-poll exercises, the party said.

The MDMK urged the Election Commission to put off the polls to May 4.

In a communication to the EC, MDMK general secretary Vaiko said the campaign would cause serious disturbance to students preparing for their examinations.

Besides, a substantial number of voters might skip polling as April 13 would be followed by a number of government holidays.
