The district police have formed 11 special teams to arrest those involved in the looting of 1381 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the Muthoot Mini Financiers (P) Limited here on Saturday.
Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan told The Hindu here on Sunday that four of the 11 teams would look into core areas of investigation, while the rest would concentrate on gathering information from other places.
“We are scrutinising every piece of information coming from the public also,” Deputy Inspector General (Coimbatore range) Bala Naga Devi told The Hindu . The lack of CCTV cameras on the premises, despite the branch transacting large volume of business, had cost valuable time of police in getting the preliminary lead in the case. Sources in police department said that some of the accused involved in robbery and dacoity cases in the region in the past, including those who robbed cash from a nationalised bank in the city a few months ago, were being questioned.
The police are also looking closely at the source of the gold seized at Walayar by the Kerala Excise department officials on the same day.
The seizure was made when the gold was being transported from Tamil Nadu without going through formalities at the check post.
