In response to a legal notice issued on behalf of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, K. Ramachandran Raja. alias K.R. Raja, and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) have tendered an unconditional apology to him and expressed profound regret.

According to a statement issued by the Minister's office on Wednesday night, K.R. Raja, in his letter of apology, has said he made certain remarks without any basis or justification. He has realised that it was wrong on his part to have made such remarks. He has said he holds Mr. Chidambaram in high regard and has always admired his courage of conviction and integrity.

In its letter, RIL has said it has severely reprimanded Mr. Raja for his irresponsible and baseless statement.

Earlier, Mr. Chidambaram said in a statement that the legal notice was issued to Mr. Ramachandran Raja for demanding an unconditional apology. Referring to a report in a section of the media on a conversation between ‘Raja' and Niira Radia, Mr. Chidambaram said his enquiries revealed that the statements attributed to Mr. Ramachandran Raja, an employee of RIL, were “totally false and per se defamatory,” and the conversation was “reckless and malicious gossip.”
