The death anniversary of Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on Saturday, triggered a fresh controversy in Kolkata, with attempts by the Trinamool Congress to appropriate the political icon.
Two Cabinet Ministers of the Trinamool government, Firhad Hakim and Sovandeb Chatterjee, participated in an event organised by the State government in south Kolkata’s Keoratola crematorium.
Not only did the Ministers garland Mookerjee’s bust, but they also called the leader one of the “great sons of Bengal”.
“There is no politics in this. This does not make us BJP or the BJP the Trinamool Congress,” Minister of State for Power, Sovandeb Chatterjee, said.
State BJP president Dilip Ghosh despite welcoming the move, said that “it had come too late”.
BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha was more critical of the ruling party and accused the Trinamool of “using Maoists to vandalise the leader’s bust in March 2018”.
