Superstitious aunt brands ailing toddler

A toddler was branded with some hot object at Nishinabandi village in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district because of a superstitious practice among its residents to cure ailments.

The 16-month-old injured child was admitted to a district hospital on Tuesday night. Dr. Debabrata Dakua, who is treating the child, said he was suffering from pneumonia, anaemia and fever. But there were burn marks on his body. As per reports, the child, son of Damu and Netra Majhi, was unwell and his aunt allegedly branded his face and neck with some hot object in order to "cure him". Some say it was a heated piece of turmeric and others suspect it was red hot iron.

When the condition of the child deteriorated, his parents rushed him to the hospital.
