‘Split with Sena brought out BJP’s potential’

CM’s remarks may add to the tension in the saffron coalition

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the crumbling of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance ahead of the Assembly elections last year proved a blessing in disguise for his party.

In his address before the start of the first-ever executive meet of the BJP’s Maharashtra unit, Mr. Fadnavis said the party had no inkling that its 25-year-old alliance with the Shiv Sena was about to collapse. However, had the BJP not gone alone in the 2014 Assembly election, the party would never have realised its true potential.

“We fought alone and secured more than 120 seats in Maharashtra, stamping our presence in the State,” said Mr. Fadnavis.

Mr. Fadnavis’ remarks are likely to aggravate the tensions that have dogged the saffron coalition since last December.
