A policeman was killed in a militant attack and a civilian died in cross-border firing on the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir on Friday.

“Militants appeared outside the Guard Post in Budgam’s Wardwan and held up constable Shamim Ahmad outside. He was unarmed and was going to offer Friday prayers at a mosque. He was asked to lead towards the post but he raised an alarm. The alert jawans successfully foiled the attempt,” said a Srinagar-based spokesman.

Mr. Ahmad, a resident of Yaripora in Kulgam, was injured in the attack and died at a hospital. “All weapons and ammunition were saved,” said the police.

A police official said the Islamic State had claimed responsibility online for the incident. “It is being verified,” said the police official.

The civilian killed in the cross-border firing in Poonch on Thursday night was identified as Mohammad Ikhlaq, 22, son of Mohammad Sadiq, a resident of Kalisan Baghal Dhara.
