No arrests were made on Saturday in connection with the alleged lynching of social worker Zafar Hussain, who had tried to prevent a group of civic officials from taking photographs of women defecating in the open at Pratapgarh in Rajasthan.
Mr. Hussain, 52, was a member of the Communist Party of India (Maxist-Leninist) and was associated with a campaign to get adequate funds under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for the construction of toilets in the slum’s households, and for getting public latrines repaired. People in the Bagwasa slum answer nature’s call in the open.
Municipal council staff allegedly beat Mr. Hussain to death on Friday when he objected to their “naming and shaming” drive. Municipal Commissioner Ashok Jain is one of the accused named in the FIR.
