Militants flee after firing checkpoint in Jammu highway

An alert was sounded in Jammu on Wednesday after three armed militants fired upon the security personnel manning a checkpoint on the Srinagar-Jammu national highwayon Wednesday. One CRPF jawan was injured in the shootout.

A police official said the firing took place near the Jhajjar Kotli police station around 8:00 a.m. “It was a brief encounter with the militants at Jhajjar nalla. The militants managed to escape,” said the police.

The police said the firing took place when they it stopped a truck. One AK-47 rifle and three magazines were recovered from the truck.

The driver and the conductor were taken into custody. “They are being questioned,” said the police.

The three armed militants in the age group of 18 to 22 years were wearing ammunition pouches. “Two of them had AK rifles and third one had a pistol. One of them was wearing ‘Pathan’ dress and two were in pants and shirts,” said the police.

A major operation was launched to nab the militants by the police, the Army and the CRPF. The security component of nearby Mata Vaishnav shrine had also been alerted, the police said.
