A group of masked men on Wednesday assaulted two priests in a Meghalaya church before ransacking the premises and fleeing with ₹1.25 lakh, the police said.

A police complaint filed by Denis T. Sangma, parish priest of St. Dominic Savio Mission at Garobadha in West Garo Hills district, said the group of 20 men, speaking broken Garo language, broke into the mission’s church at 1.15 a.m. during a power cut, tied up assistant parish priest Rev Thomas John and preacher Daniel M. Sangma, and attacked them with iron rods.

The miscreants then ransacked the church, took ₹1.25 lakh and two smart phones and fled when another priest sounded the alarm, the FIR said.

The police said the ransacking of the church was similar to the attack on three other churches across the Garo Hills of the State.
