The Janata Dal (United) finally suspended party leader and former Bihar Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma on Thursday, days after the Supreme Court expressed shock over the failure of Bihar police to arrest her. Ms. Verma has been absconding in an Arms Act case linked to the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case.
JD(U) State president Bashishtha Narayan Singh said the party suspended Ms. Verma from its primary membership in keeping with its policy of “zero tolerance for crime and corruption”.
“We have always taken a tough stance whenever any member of our party is found to be involved in any criminal or corruption case. Nothing new in that,” he said.
Ms. Verma, a two-time MLA from Cheria Bariarpur constituency in Begusarai district, had to step down from her ministerial post after her husband Chandrasekhar Verma’s name cropped up in the shelter home case.
