Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lay the foundation stone for the second campus of St. Xavier’s College here on Friday. The campus will come up at an estimated cost of Rs. 250 crore at Rajarhat in the eastern parts of the city.
“The new campus will also be the permanent campus of the proposed university a status, which the educational institution is vying for. It will house a business school offering both BBA and MBA courses along with integrated five-year courses on microbiology, biotechnology and computer sciences,” college principal Felix Raj told The Hindu on Thursday.
The institute will also house a research facility for these departments offering PhD programmes, he said.
“We will try to facilitate research which helps in development of the people at large. The focuses of research will be the development of the State,” Mr. Raj said.
The new campus, coming up on 17 acres of land will be fully funded by the institution with some assistance from the alumni, he said.
Alumni’s contributionStating that the institution has already collected a significant amount of contribution by the alumni, Mr. Raj said the college has an illustrious list of alumni that includes ArcelorMittal’s CEO L.N. Mittal and city-based industrialist Sanjiv Goenka.
The 150-year-old institution was accorded the status of an autonomous college under the University of Calcutta in 2006.
The college has 18 under graduate, six post graduate courses and about 7,000 enrolled students.
