With a pledge to work to achieve legitimate rights of the tribal people, organisations in Tripura observed International Day of the World’s Indigenous People on Saturday. The theme of this year’s observance is ‘Bridging the gap- implementing the rights of indigenous people.’
Symposiums and colourful rallies marked the day in Agartala and elsewhere in the state where tribal count 33 percent of total population. “The day assumes significance as indigenous people of the state look for fulfilment of some genuine issues”, Anthony Debbarma, Secretary of Borok Peoples Human Rights Organisation (BPHRO), said as he spoke in observance of the day.
Besides a symposium, BPHRO organised a colourful rally in Agartala with participants in their traditional fatigues and attires.
Adivasi Adhikar Rastriya Manch (National Forum of Tribal Rights) also brought out a rally to observe the international day. Speaking before a gathering state’s forest minister Naresh Jamatia called upon everyone to help protect rights of indigenous people.
“Rights of indigenous communities in Tripura are protected, but there should be an all out effort to excel more for them”, Mr Jamatia said adding that condition of the tribes is vulnerable in many parts of the world.
