A man hung himself after allegedly strangulating his mentally challenged son in the early hours of Sunday.
The incident took place at Gudianali area of Odisha’s Dhenkanal district headquarter town, about 80 km from here.
Shakti Prasad Acharya, a government employee of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS), who had recently taken voluntary retirement from his service, was suspected to have taken extreme step after getting fed up with shouldering responsibilities of his mentally retarded son, said P. K. Pradhan, inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Dhenkanal Town Police Station.
“Shakti Acharya’s son Bidhu Bhusan Acharya (32) was suffering from neuropsychiatric disorders. Bidhu needed assistance to move from one place to another. The father was tired of the responsibility. Since two of his sons were working away from home, the parents had to share the burden between them,” Mr. Pradhan said.
Nalini Acharya, wife of Shakti Prasad Acharya, spotted her husband’s body hanging from ceiling of the roof and son’s body lying on bed at 3.30 am on Sunday, said IIC of Dhenkanal Town Police.
On being informed, the police rushed to Acharyas’ house and started investigation. They found a suicidal note from near the body. According to police sources, the note mentioned that despite focussed medical attention, Bidhu Bhushan was not recovering for which Shakti Prasad took the extreme step.
