The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is chiefly eyeing an alliance with the Janata Dal (United) in Bihar for the Lok Sabha elections. The party also aims to work out a Left unity in the State.
“We are making efforts to maintain the Left unity and plan to have electoral adjustments in the States with non-UPA, non-NDA political parties. We regard the split between the JD (U) and the BJP as a major development in Bihar. The Congress, the RJD and the Lok Janshakti Party, it seems, are coming together. In this scenario, the JD (U) is the only option for an alliance,” CPI(M) Polit Bureau member S. Ramachandran Pillai told a press conference here on Tuesday.
Mr. Pillai said a key challenge before the party was to stop the BJP, which is trying for big gains in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The CPI (M) is undecided on the number of seats it wishes to contest in Bihar. Mr. Pillai said the party will also hold discussions with the CPI (Marxist-Leninist), which has maintained a distance from the Left parties. The CPI (ML) has a larger political presence in Bihar compared to the other Left parties. It is also opposed to joining hands with the JD (U).
