Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma has been elected unopposed to the Upper House from Himachal Pradesh, his home State.

The Opposition BJP, with just 27 members in the 68-seat House, chose not to field a candidate against him.

Returning Officer and Vidhan Sabha Secretary Sundar Singh Verma issued a certificate of election to Mr. Sharma, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha from the State in 1984 and 2004.

Mr. Sharma said he would raise the issue of special category status to Himachal Pradesh and persuade the Centre to release the grants withheld.
