Unknown assailants pump three bullets into him; Kafeel Khan alleges link to hospital tragedy

The brother of doctor Kafeel Khan, who is out on bail in connection with the BRD Medical College incident, was shot at by unknown assailants in his hometown Gorakhpur late on Sunday. Kashif Jameel, 35, runs a battery inverter business.

Two men on a scooty allegedly fired at Mr. Jameel around 10.15 p.m. and fled from the scene leaving him grievously wounded, his family said. Mr. Jameel was hit by three bullets: while two bullets pierced through his shoulder and arm, the third bullet got lodged in the neck. It was removed after an emergency operation early on Monday. “The victim is out of danger,” said Gorakhpur Senior Superintendent of Police Shalabh Mathur.

FIR registered

An FIR was registered at the Kotwali police station under attempt to murder against two-three unknown persons. As per the complaint filed by the victim’s brother Adeel Khan, the assailants fired at him “indiscriminately” when he was near J.P. Hotel with an “intention to kill him”.

Dr. Khan suspected foul play hinting it was linked to the Gorakhpur hospital case, where several infants died last August allegedly due to lack of oxygen. He is currently out on bail after spending seven months in jail in connection with the case.

“It was an attempt to murder my brother. I always said they would try to kill us,” he said in a video message, adding, “I’m not going to bend.”

Dr. Khan alleged that the police caused a delay of a few hours in his brother receiving urgent medical care. He said the police forced them to take the patient, who was rushed to a private nursing home initially, to the medical college for a medico legal test despite the urgent need to get the third bullet removed.

‘Poor law and order’

Dr. Khan said the attack on his brother reflected the poor law and order situation in the State, saying it took place around 500 metres from the Gorakhnath temple where Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was lodged for the night. SSP Mathur said police are “investigating all angles”.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati slammed the BJP government saying the incident was proof of the “growing jungle raj” under Mr. Adityanath.

Demanding strict action against the culprits, she said the sluggishness of the

BJP government and hollow speeches of its leaders was the cause for the present “rule of lawlessness and violence” in U.P.
