The CPI(M)-led Left Front in Tripura has scored a massive victory over the Congress and the BJP in the December 9 civic elections, of which results were declared on Saturday.

The CPI(M) won the Jirania Municipal Council in west Tripura unopposed. Of the 310 wards in the Agartala Municipal Corporation and other civic bodies in the State, the Opposition won a mere 19 wards, the rest going to the Left Front.

For the first time in the State, the BJP opened its account, winning two of the 23 seats of the Dharmanagar municipal council in north Tripura and stood second in the rest. The party was the main rival to the Left Front in some seats elsewhere, but the Congress surged ahead of the BJP in most of the places.

The Left Front won 45 of the 49 wards of the Agartala Municipal Council. The Congress finished second with four seats. The Left Front said the results showed the people voted for development.
