Agartala-Akhura border checkpost infrastructure to be upgraded

The existing infrastructure will be upgraded in Tripura’s Akhaura border checkpost area here along Bangladesh for making the beating retreat ceremony more atractive, state Tourism Minister Ratan Bhowmik said today.

“The Centre has already sanctioned Rs 18.09 crore to develop Wagah border like facilities at Akhaura checkpost in the capital town. We have already received 20 per cent money of the total outlay,” Bhowmik told reporters here.

An open theater, conference hall and a gallery would be constructed for visitors to see the beating retreat parade by BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, he said.

The beating retreat ceremony is performed at Wagah border in Punjab during closing of the border every evening by the BSF and its Pakistani counterpart since 1959 and is a major tourist attraction.

The BSF and the BGB now regularly perform beating retreat at Agartala-Akhaura border and it would be more exciting with the building of upper infrastructure, Bhowmik said.
