Senior Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Praveen Togadia was barred by the city police from attending and addressing a convention of the VHP in Guwahati on Thursday after Dr. Togadia allegedly made “inflammatory speech” in a meeting at Patharkandi in southern Assam’s Karimganj district earlier on Wednesday and asked the religious minority groups to “reconvert to Hinduism”.

City Police Commissioner Jyotirmay Chakravarty in his order issued on Wednesday under Section 144 of the CrPC, in which he directed Dr Togadia to abstain from attending the meeting, alleged that the senior VHP leader was “likely to make similar inflammatory speeches, if allowed to address” it and “thereby disturbing public peace and order in Guwahati and other areas in a serious manner.” The meeting was organised by the city unit of the VHP as part of Golden Jubilee celebration of the VHP.

The Police Commissioner stated that it was reported to him that Dr Togadia in his speech at a meeting at Patharkandi in Karimganj district on Wednesday had “asked the religious minority groups to reconvert to Hinduism.”

“Such inflammatory speeches hurt the sentiments of religious minority community and create a deep sense of insecurity among them which is likely to disturb public peace and order,” the police commissioner stated in the order.
