West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has sought to sensitise the police force to their duty towards society. In the aftermath of the incident at Barasat, where a teenager lost his life, trying to protect his sister from three youths, the Director-General of Police is sending out instructions to ensure that policemen react more sensitively to the needs of society.
Around midnight, the woman was riding pillion on her brother's bicycle while returning home from work in the city. They were accosted by the drunken youths and in the ensuing clash her brother was stabbed. The woman ran to get help from three policemen who were guarding bungalows nearby, but her pleas fell on deaf ears.
The constable who ignored her pleas has been suspended and a youth, suspected to have been involved in the incident, arrested.
Governor M.K. Narayanan, while condemning the incident, called for exemplary punishment to the youths.
The Chief Minister, who met the family on Wednesday, convened a meeting of officials on Thursday where he highlighted the need for sensitising the police force and restoring people's confidence in it, said Home Secretary G.D Gautama.
The need for taking action by the police and excise officials against illicit liquor vendors was stressed by the Chief Minister.
Asked why action was taken only against a constable when the police personnel at the station should also have been held responsible for allowing illicit liquor trade for long, the Home Secretary said: “Investigations are now on and action will be taken against anybody found guilty. The police have arrested one person called Chandan, and interrogation is on to nab the other two,” he said.
