After Maharashtra and Rajasthan, Gujarat has also joined in ban of meat products for one week during the week-long Jain festival Paryushan.

Ahmedabad Police Commissioner has issued a notification prohibiting sluaghter of animals in open and selling meat products in open during the festival.

"In Gujarat, it's been tradition for decades that during the Paryushan, animals are not slaughtered openly or meat sold openly. This is not the first time such notification has been issued. It happens every year," said a police official.

Even the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)-run slaughter houses remain closed during the festival that began on Thursday.

"It's a mark of respect to the religious sentiments of the Jain community... no politics (is) involved in this," said a BJP MLA from Ahmedabad.
