One crore saplings to be distributed today

Mass greening drive for World Environment Day

The State government is spearheading efforts to distribute one crore saplings on the occasion of World Environment Day on Monday.

The observance will be led by Governor P. Sathasivam who will plant saplings on the Raj Bhavan premises and launch the State-level celebrations at the Nishagandi auditorium. Environmental activists Sugathakumari and C.K. Karunakaran will be felicitated.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the observance at AKG Memorial Government Higher Secondary School in Pinarayi, Kannur.

The Health, Social Justice and Local Self Government departments and the National Rural Health Mission will observe ‘Suchitwa Hartal’ across the State. Routine work will be set aside and cleaning drives will be organised at the domestic and institutional levels from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Health Minister K.K. Shylaja will inaugurate the initiative at a function at Karakulam U.P. School in Thiruvananthapuram.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit under the Higher Education Department will launch Mazhakkoythulsavam. Under the one-month endeavour NSS volunteers will plant 10 lakh saplings and construct five lakh rainwater pits. Education Minister C. Ravindranath will launch the programme at the Medical College Campus Government Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode.

The Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd. will undertake a tree-planting drive on its office premises from June 5 to 10. The Kerala State Youth Welfare Board will organise related programmes in youth clubs, cultural organisations and educational institutions from June 5 to 10. Former bureaucrat Babu Paul will launch the initiative at Government Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram, on Monday.
