Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that the government was ‘sleeping’ while the Chinese troops carried out attack ‘pre-planned’ attack in Galwan valley in Ladakh and the Indian soldiers had to pay the price.

Mr Gandhi’s attack against the Centre came hours before the all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the situation along the India-China border .

“It's now crystal clear that: The Chinese attack in Galwan was pre-planned. The Government of India was fast asleep and denied the problem. The price was paid by our martyred Jawans," the Congress leader said on Twitter.

He also tagged a report that quoted Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik as saying the attack was pre-planned by China and the Indian forces will give a befitting reply.

On Monday night, 20 Indian Army personnel, including a Colonel, were killed in a clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh.

Even before the violent face off, Mr Gandhi had been urging the Modi government to ‘come clean’ on the border situation. Since then, he has stepped up his attack and has asked the government to explain how the Chinese could occupy Indian territory and why were India soldiers sent “unarmed to martyrdom”.

Mr Gandhi, who turned 50 on Friday, also decided not to celebrate his birthday due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the death of 20 Army personnel in the India-China face off in Ladakh.

Many party leaders, however, wish the former Congress president on social media platforms. While former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had sent a letter to Mr Gandhi, other senior leaders like Ahmed Patel, K C Venugopal, Anand Sharma, Manish Tewari and Randeep Surjewala took to twitter to convey their greetings.
